Back in June, I wrote a post called Saoirse - Destroyer of Worlds. In the post I introduced you all to my youngest girl and her interest in scary movies.
Well, we went trick or treating last night.
*walking along and the sound of a haunted house tape is playing across the street. Suddenly a woman screams on the tape, really loud*
Saoirse: oooh, is she being murdered over there? (She said this with great concern)
Found this today through a link on Netscape... I lost the blasted Netscape link, but here is where it was going
UPDATE: Sorry, I normally tell everyone what this is leading to, I have forgotten and I apologize. Blind links suck. This will take you to a page with images of children's letter to God. Very funny stuff.
They assert that this game taught their son how to shoot.
Ok, raise your hands if you played Grand Theft Auto... *raises hand*... the aiming of he gun is left trigger, hardly really teaching someone how to aim a gun.
What about the violence in movies and TV? Why do they not blame Rainbow 6? That game really teaches you to use a gun better than GTA. In fact with the realistic physics of bullets that is probably more of a training game than anything else.
Now, the 14 year old kid, what the article does not make mention, has had a history of being violently abused, well according to the comments in the Digg.com article. So before this kid ever picked up this game he had issues. So ... the game maker is at fault huh? Like how Coors and Budweiser are to blame for someone drinking too much and then crashing their car into a school bus killing all on board. Right? Or Smith and Wesson being sued for the gun the kid used.
How about the parents and their responsibility to monitor what their kid is doing? Where are they?
But once again Jack Thompson is involved. On one hand, he is right in that young children should not be playing these games. But on the other hand he is trying to ban these games completely and take my parentaly duties out of my own hands...taking my own personal decisions on what I wish to play out of my own hands. I am an adult and I pay my taxes, raise my children, go to work and am a citizen in this country.
I also take issue with Jack Thompson in that he is attempting to play parent to my children and really that I find offensive more than anything else. I do not allow my kids to play violent video games and my wife and I monitor what they do get to play and when that is. In fact my children get about a single hour a week to play... and they play mostly Animal Crossing. But there, that is my decision, in which I am being a parent. If Jack Thompson will send birthday cards and gifts for my children... take part in their lives, clothe them...feed them... take part in the financial needs of my children then he may make suggestions and be part of their development. But until that time happens... he can go get bent.
What do you all say? Do you agree with me? Do you disagree? I am interested in hearing what you have to say on the issue.
I have seen many gamers get mad at Jack Thompson and they further prove him right when they call him and threaten him. Jack Thompson fails to realize that a majority of gamers are over 30. We are a majority of adults that for the most part are stable mentally and financially. The industry is making more than the movie industry... that is a lot of gamers.
So parents... do your jobs and Jack Thompson will go away...
